Asbestos medical examination

Asbestos is a mineral fibre found in rocks, and still mined in many countries around the world.

Asbestos has been shown to cause cancer of the lungs and stomach. There is no level of exposure to asbestos fibers that experts can assure is completely safe. Once inhaled, asbestos fibers can become lodged in tissue for a long time. After many years cancer - mesothelioma - can develop. Regular Asbestos medical examinations are recommended for people who have been exposed in the past or may be potentially at risk of exposure.

Asbestos medical examination should include:

-Medical history including history of previous potential exposure.

-Physical examination focused on chest and respiratory system

-Spirometry, lung function test to assess the function of the lungs

-Periodic chest X-ray to observe for any early changes in the lung tissue

-Counseling/final statement by the assessing doctor.
